There are many scams on the Internet and it seems that losers have come up with another one — the latest being what they call iTunes Gift Card generator programs. As you can imagine, the premise behind this is that there is some kind of an exploit available in the iTunes Store that allows random codes (which are purported to be valid) to be generated, which when entered into your iTunes account will allow you to add money to it that will allow you to download different songs and shows from the service.
Any person with any ethics would realize that if this were actually true, Apple would have done something about it a long time ago, since this is undoubtedly theft. While you could argue from some wacko libertarian angle that torrenting movies and music from the Piratebay is not theft, nobody in their right mind would argue that hacking into a service where you are supposed to pay for things and then taking those things without paying is not theft. People who think this is OK are just criminals.
So what are the risks?
Let’s say this actually works, what are the risks? Let’s start with 25 years in jail or a $1,000,000 fine, because Internet theft is considered a Class A felony and is punishable by the criminal code with the maximum effect of the law. And if you think they won’t catch you, then I’m afraid you are ignorant of reality. iTunes gift card generator codes need to be entered into an existing iTunes account and to sign up for one of these accounts, you need to give them a credit card number. There’s no such thing as a free iTunes store account. I repeat, you cannot even sign up for one of these things without giving out a real name and address because the sign up process includes a credit card verification step. You cannot download any movies or music without first giving Apple a real name, a real address and then using a credit card number to verify all of this. At this point, you might be thinking that anyone who uses an iTunes gift card generatorto create a code to hack Apple must be an idiot worthy of the Darwin awards — and you’d be completely right.
So what kind of scams are out there?
There are quite a few different types of these iTunes card generatorscams on the Internet. After all, the people who make these things are trying to exploit those people who don’t understand basic principles of Internet security and are prone to things like phishing attacks and trojan keyloggers that steal their bank account login details.
Programs loaded with keyloggers and other trojans and rootkits — this is the most common type of iTunes gift card generatorout there. It’s actually a fake program that doesn’t do anything, but when you run it, viruses are installed on your system which then steal your personal information and passwords.
Programs that don’t do anything but are sold — then there are the type that don’t actually do anything, but are sold for a price claiming they really work. When you try to get a refund you mysteriously cannot contact anyone and then later on your credit card is charged for more services and you become a victim of credit card fraud.
Whatever you do, don’t fall for the iTunes gift card generator scam.
